||Officer Johnny L. Martin was a 4-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 013th District. On June 28, 1990, Officer Martin was off duty and in his home when his neighbor had an altercation with a would-be car thief. The neighbor confronted Lionel Myles, 32, for tampering with his vehicle. Myles left the scene and went to his Lakeview home where he retrieved a handgun. He returned to the scene and found Officer Martin and the neighbor discussing the incident. Myles rode his bicycle to where the two men were standing, pressed his gun against Officer Martin’s chest and fired one fatal shot to the heart. Lionel Myles was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He was released from prison September 28, 2007. Officer Martin’s funeral mass was held at The People’s Church of Chicago and he was laid to rest in Rosehill Cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Alice Jean; sisters, Deborah, Sharon, Pam, Joan and Francine; and brothers, Michael and Ronald.
