||Police Officer Jose Torres, 35, was a 5-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 010 District. On August 5, 1979, Officer Torres became the victim of a drunk hit-and-run drunk driver. The officer was processing a car accident near the intersection of Blue Island Avenue and Leavitt Street when he was struck by a vehicle that failed to yield to a stop sign. The intoxicated driver, Jesus Morales, 21, was arrested five hours later. Morales was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, hitting a pedestrian in the roadway, and driving without a city vehicle license. Officer Torres was hospitalized in critical condition until his death on August 21, 1979. Officer Torres was laid to rest in Puerto Rico. He is survived by his wife, Ines.
