||Police Officer Joseph Higgins, 43, was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 006 District. On March 23, 1975, Officer Higgins along with other Gresham District Officers trapped a burglar inside of a home located on the 1700 West block of 99thStreet. Officer Higgins was guarding the rear exit when the burglar attempted to flee. A struggle ensued between the officer and the suspect, George Williams. Williams was subdued by Officer Higgins and three additional officers. After the altercation, the officer began to complain of dizziness and collapsed. He was transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital where he was pronounced dead. George Williams was charged with burglary and resisting arrest. At the time of the incident, he was on parole for burglary. Officer Higgins’ funeral mass was held at St. Alexander Church and he was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Margaret, Mary, and Nora Ann; and a son, Bill.
