Incident Details: Police Officer Joseph Kurtz, 27, was a 30-day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Maxwell Street Station.

On June 7, 1921, Officer Kurtz and his partner, James Hennelly, attempted to stop a physical altercation occurring near 17th and Canal Streets.  Officer Kurtz, who was in plain clothes, subdued Arthur Brinzinger, as Officer Hennelly held Louis Brinzinger by the waist.  Louis Brinzinger was able to reach for his gun; he fatally wound Officer Kurtz in the chest.  Officer Kurtz died en route to County Hospital.

Arthur and Louis Brinzinger were acquitted.

Officer Kurtz was laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery.
