|Incident Details:||Police Officer Julian Bonfield, 38, was assigned to the Wabash Avenue Station.
On December 15, 1926, Officer Bonfield responded to a robbery-in-progress occurring inside of the University Extension Conservatory store at Langley Avenue and 41st Street. As the three armed robbers exited, Officer Bonfield ordered them to halt. One of the offenders, Elin Lyons, had a gun wrapped in a fur coat he was holding and shot the officer. Officer Bonfield died en route to Chicago Hospital.
Elin Lyons was charged with murder and hanged on June 24, 1927.
Officer Bonfield was laid to rest in Oak Woods Cemetery. He was survived by his wife; mother and father (CPD); and four siblings.
