|Incident Details:||Police Officer LaVaughn White, 35, was an 8-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 008 District.
On June 5, 1961, Officer White was walking his dog at 2:00 a.m. when he witnessed a robbery-in-progress occurring in a tavern below his apartment. The officer entered the tavern with his weapon drawn when Harold McEven, Thomas Jackson, Donald Curry, and Joseph Preweth opened fire on him. McEwen was injured and his three accomplices fled the scene. Officer White was fatally injured. Prewett was identified after dropping his wallet at the scene; he identified the other two men.
Harold McEven, Thomas Jackson, Donald Curry, and Joseph Preweth, pleaded guilty to murder and were each sentenced to 99 years in prison.
