|Incident Details:||Police Officer Leo Grant, 30, was assigned to the 11th District.
On March 12, 1927, Officer Grant was shot by three escaped fugitives from the Illinois State Penitentiary at Joliet. The officers spotted the fugitives — Robert Torrez, Gregario Rizzo, and Bernard Roa — on Ewing Avenue between 98th and 99th Street. All three had been previously sentenced to death and immediately opened fire on the approaching officers. Officer Grant was wounded and transported to South Chicago Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Robert Torrez and Gregario Rizzo were arrested. Bernard Roa was never apprehended.
Officer Grant’s funeral service was held at Drexel Park Presbyterian Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Helen, and son, Leo Jr.
