|Incident Details:||Police Officer Leon Czajka, 45, was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Division.
On January 21, 1939, Officer Czajka responded to two officers requesting assistance in the pursuit of two male auto thieves. The officers attempted to question two suspects at Dearborn and Lake Streets when they ran away. Officer Czajka pursued the offenders on foot and arrested them. Tragically, during the arrest the officer suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and collapsed. A private citizen, Elwood Zuley, witnessed the incident and carried out a citizen’s arrest.
Alex Gerulis and William Severa were charged with auto theft.
Officer Czajka was survived by his wife.
