|Incident Details:||Detective Kelliher, 52, was a 24-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Warren Avenue Station.
On January 25, 1956, Detective Kelliher and his partner, William Derrig went to a hotel located at California Avenue and Warren Boulevard to conduct a narcotics investigation. The detectives saw two suspicious men and attempted to question them. One of the suspects, Donald Lawrence, opened fire and fatally wounded Detective Kelliher. An anonymous tip helped police find and identify Donald Lawrence.
Donald Lawrence pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve 199 years in prison.
Detective Kelliher’s funeral mass was held at St. Catherine of Siena Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and father (CPD Captain).
