|Incident Details:||Police Officer Martin Collins was assigned to the Chicago Park District Police – South.
On January 2, 1921, Officer Collins was on patrol when he attempted to stop an intoxicated driver. The officer saw a vehicle being driven by David Stephenson Groh, with his wife seated in the passenger side seat. As Officer Collins signaled and yelled to Groh to pull over, a running board machine passed by and pushed the officer onto the street. According to witnesses at the intersection of Garfield Boulevard and Ashland Avenue, David Groh then drove into Officer Collins and deliberately crushed the officer between his and another vehicle.
David Groh and his wife were arrested and held at the Englewood Station.
Officer Collins was transported to German Deaconess Hospital where he died on January 4, 1921.
