||Police Officer Melvin Galloway, 26, was a 3-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Austin District – Tactical Unit. On March 21, 1971, Officer Galloway and other officers were on an undercover vice assignment at a lounge in the 5600 block of West Grand Avenue. While in the lounge, an argument occurred between Officer Galloway and a customer, Amzi Freeman. Freeman drew a knife and cut Officer Galloway in the arms and legs; then he fatally shot him. An undercover officer fatally wounded Freeman, 26. Officer Galloway was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Anne’s Hospital. Officer Galloway was laid to rest in Memory Garden. He is survived by his son, David, and his parents, Melvin and Alice.
