Incident Details: Police Officer Melvin Gossmeyer, 33, was a 4-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Task Force.

On July 17, 1960, Officer Gossmeyer was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of 106th Street and Ewing Avenue while riding his three wheel police motorcycle. The vehicle was being pursued by a squad car and a citizen after fleeing the scene of a car accident. The hit-and-run driver, Larry Benford, lost control of his car and struck of Officer Gossmeyer and several pedestrians. One pedestrian died of his injuries. Officer Gossmeyer was transported to a local hospital where he died shortly after the incident.

Larry Benford, 22, was charged with reckless homicide.

Officer Gossmeyer is survived by his wife, Marie; and children, Roseann, Melvin Jr., and Elizabeth.
