Police Officer Michael Duffy, 41, was an 8-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 11th Precinct.
On November 28, 1919, Officer Duffy responded to a call about a man waving a gun inside of a saloon in the 6100 block of South Halsted Avenue. Officer Duffy attempted to arrest the offender, George Rogers, when he was fatally wounded. Officer Duffy died at St. Bernard Hospital on November 30.
George Rogers was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Duffy’s funeral mass was held at Visitation Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Mary; and their children, Michael, Vincent, Ambrose, and Marion.
