|Incident Details:||Police Officer Michael Murtaugh, 45, was assigned to the 17th District.
On October 11, 1924, Officer Murtaugh was on foot patrol when he heard gunfire coming from a speeding vehicle. The officer stepped into the middle of the street with his gun drawn and attempted to stop the vehicle. As the vehicle slowed, a man opened fire on the officer. Officer Murtaugh was transported to St. Anthony Hospital where he succumbed to his injury.
In 1940, Joseph Okoniewski turned himself into police and confessed to Officer Murtaugh's murder.
Officer Murtaugh was laid to rest in All Saints Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and three children.
