|Incident Details:||Police Officer Mitchell Stone, 38, was assigned to the 001 District.
On April 29, 1959, Officer Stone and his partner, Officer Gerald Marzillo, were in their squad car when a woman reported to them that an armed jewel thief was nearby. The officers spotted the thief, William Witherspoon, in the 1200 block of South Michigan Avenue. Officer Stone exited the vehicle and Officer Marzillo drove the squad car in search for the thief. Officer Marzillo was close by when he heard the sound of gunshots. He drove to the scene and found that his partner had been shot. Officer Stone was rushed to St. Luke Hospital where he later died.
William Witherspoon was found guilty and sentenced to death. During his retrial, Witherspoon was sentenced to 50 years in prison of which he serve 20 before being paroled.
Officer Stone’s funeral mass was held at St. Tarcissus’ Church. He was survived by his wife, Ethel; and sons, Bradley and Michael. Michael was born four days after his father’s death.
