Incident Details: Detective John J. Blyth, 41, was assigned to the Stockyards Station. On June 16, 1956, Detective Blyth and his partner, Officer Daniel Rolewicz were on patrol when they heard gunfire. The officers spotted a possible suspect who upon seeing them started running. Detective Blyth pursued James Dukes into an alley when he was shot. The detective was able to wound Dukes before collapsing. Dukes fled the scene, but was found hiding behind a vehicle a short time later. Detective Blyth was pronounced dead upon arrival to a local hospital.

James Dukes, 30, was found guilty of murder and was executed in Cook County Jail on August 24, 1962.

Detective Blyth’s funeral mass was held at St. Adrian’s Church and he was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He is survived by his wife and children, William, Norrine, Mary Ann, and John Jr.
