|Incident Details:||Police Officer Patrick O’Malley, 31, was assigned to the Damen Avenue Station.
On August 21, 1938, Officer O’Malley was off duty inside of a closed tavern in the 2400 block of North Clark Street. Four armed robbers entered the tavern and announced, “This is a stickup.” Officer O’Malley drew his gun and began firing at the offenders. The officer fatally injured Trussie Townsend and wounded George Hamer. The three offenders escaped into a waiting getaway car. Hamer was arrested when he sought medical attention. Officer O’Malley was transported to North Chicago Community Hospital and succumbed to his injuries on August 30.
Howard Poe was found guilty and died in the electric chair. Lucious Webb was sentenced to 199 years in prison; he was paroled in 1960. Henry Napue was sentenced to 199 years in prison, but was paroled in 1960. George Hamer was sentenced to 199 years in prison.
Police Officer O’Malley’s funeral mass was held at Saint Clement Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery. He was survived by his parents and siblings.
