Incident Details: Police Officer Patrick O'Meara, 38, was a 14-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 001 Precinct.

On August 5, 1872, Officer O'Meara and his partner, Officer Scanlon, were attempting to execute an arrest warrant on  Christopher Rafferty.  The officers found Rafferty at Daniel O'Brien's Saloon at 35th  Place and Halsted Street.   Initially, Rafferty was cooperative and appeared as though he would leave the saloon peacefully.  As they walked towards the door, the offender drew a gun and pointed it at Officer Meara's chest.   Officer O'Meara said, "Stay Chris, don't shoot," before Rafferty opened fire and fatally wounded him.   Officer O'Meara died at the scene.

Christopher Rafferty was found guilty.  He was hanged in 1874.

Officer O'Meara was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.  He was survived by his wife and five children.
