|Incident Details:||Police Officer Peter Melody, 54, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Stanton Avenue Station.
On November 27, 1924, Officer Melody had finished his tour of duty and was walking home when he heard the sounds of a burglar alarm coming from the Vernon Drug Company located at 35th Street and Vernon Avenue. When the officer arrived to the scene, he mistook the night watchmen as an intruder and struck him with his police baton. The watchmen opened fire and shot the officer. Officer Melody was transported to Lakeside Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officer Melody was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and son.
