|Incident Details:||Police Officer Richard Burke, 39, was a 12-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 15th Precinct.
On June 16, 1919, Officer Burke attempted to close down a saloon operating after legal closing time at 33rdand Halsted Streets. The officer was shot inside of the saloon and then left on the sidewalk. An officer nearby heard the gunshots and witnessed a group of men enter a taxi cab. The officer pursued the taxi and arrested the men inside. Officer Burke died at the scene.
William Kelly was found guilty of Officer Burke’s murder. He was hanged on February 20, 1920.
Officer Burke was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
