||Police Officer Robert Strugala, 29, was assigned to the Marquette Station. On June 16, 1974, Officer Strugala and his partner, Officer John Wasco, were on patrol when they heard gunfire coming from a bar near 26thStreet and Kedzie Avenue. The officers entered the tavern and ordered Jose Guillen and his cousin to drop their weapons. Instead, the offenders opened fire. Guillen shot officer Wasco multiple times and then, opened fire on Officer Strugala. Guillen was shot at the scene. Officer Wasco was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital where he later recovered. Officer Strugala succumbed to his injuries. Jose Guillen was sentenced to serve 50-100 years in prison. He was paroled after serving 30 years. Guillen’s cousin is believed to have fled to Mexico. Officer Strugala’s funeral mass was held at Holy Cross Church and he was laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Christine, and son, Robert.
