||Police Officer Thomas Adams, 31, was a 6-month veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 011 District. On August 27, 1973, Officer Adams was shot while off duty and investigating a crime. The officer was found dead near his home on the 4200 block of South Indiana Avenue. A .38 caliber gun was found near the scene and was later linked to Darryl Smith. Smith, 27, turned himself in at the Wentworth District on August 29, 1973. Officer Smith was laid to rest in Homewood Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Mark and Daryl; and his parents, Thomas and Ophiela.
