|Incident Details:||Police Officer Thomas Costello, 31, was a 4-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Kensington Station.
On November 21, 1949, Officer Costello and his partner, Frank Krasula, 36, were transporting a woman and her husband to the hospital when they were struck by a delivery truck at the intersection of 71st Street, Cottage Grove Avenue, and South Chicago Avenue. The passengers were slightly injured. Officer Krasula suffered a skull fracture. Officer Costello was rushed to Jackson Park Hospital where he died shortly after arriving.
The driver of the produce truck, Russel Phillips, 26, was charged with reckless homicide.
Officer Costello’s funeral mass was held at St. Killian’s Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery. He is survived his wife, Mary; son, James; and his father James (CPD).
