Incident Details: Police Officer Timothy Devine, 43, was a 14-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 28th Precinct.

On August 12, 1902, Officer Devine and his partner, Charles Pennell, 38, attempted to apprehend two burglars at Jackson Boulevard and Ashland Avenue.  The officers recognized the offenders, Louis Stowkowski and Charles Krueger, and attempted to take them into custody when they were shot.  Officer Pennell was transported to Cook County Hospital and was able to give police a description of events, before succumbing to his injuries.  Officer Devine died at the scene.

Louis Stowkowski was implicated in the crime through a jail house snitch.  In 1905, Charles Krueger, confessed to murdering the officers before being executed for an unrelated crime.

Officer Devine’s funeral mass was held at St. Malachy’s Church and he was laid to rest in Calvalry Cemetery.  He was survived by wife and nine children.
