|Incident Details:||Police Officer Timothy Mahoney, 40, was assigned to the Deering Street Station.
On June 11, 1881, Officer Mahoney was patrolling his beat when Richard Jones approached him at 37thand Halsted Streets. Mrs. and Mr. Richard Jones had entered their home and found two burglars inside. Jones chased the burglars out of his home when he found the officer in the street. He reported the incident to Officer Mahoney, who realized that he had seen the offenders as they fled. Officer Mahoney soon found both the men. Tragically, the two offenders opened fire and shot the officer three times. Officer Mahoney succumbed to his injuries on June 12.
The offenders were never apprehended.
Officer Mahoney was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and daughter.
At the time of the incident, economic compensation was not available to the families of fallen officers. Police officers and citizens raised over $5,000 for Officer Mahoney’s family.
