||Police Officer Wayne J. Klacza, 32, was a 7-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Public Housing Division. On June 28, 1983, Officer Klacza was waiting to cross the street at 3151 West Harrison Street when he saw a vehicle being driven erratically. The driver, Sandra Little, swerved into the wrong lane of traffic and was heading into the path of a pedestrian. Officer Klacza pushed the hearing impaired pedestrian to safety when the officer was struck by the vehicle. Little, 25, left the scene of the accident and crashed into a utility pole, suffering a fractured arm. She was charged with reckless homicide, possession of a controlled substance, and driving under the influence of narcotics. Officer Klacza died of his injuries at Mount Sinai Hospital on his wife’s birthday. They had recently welcomed their third child. Officer Klacza’s mass was held at St. Daniel the Prophet Church and he was laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and three children: Wayne Jr, John and Mary Ann.
