||Incident Details: Police Officer Wendell Hicks, 40, was a 14-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 005 District. On March 29, 1973, Officer Hicks was leaving a bowling alley on the 7500 block of South Prairie Avenue when he witnessed a man being robbed. The off-duty officer immediately identified himself as an officer and ran to assist the victim. One of the armed offenders, Charles Thompson, fled on foot. The second armed robber, Herman Reese, stole the victim’s car and sped away. Officer Hicks pursued the carjacker in his own vehicle. As Reese drove into an alley on 69thStreet between Michigan and Indiana Avenues, the stolen vehicle skidded off the road and crashed into a fence. Officer Hicks exited his vehicle and attempted to make an arrest when Reese shot him. Officer Hicks died at the scene. Charles Thompson, 24, and Herman Reese, 22, were charged with armed robbery and murder. Officer Hicks’ funeral mass was held at Progressive Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Luecelestine; daughters, Sharon and Alicia.
