|Incident Details:||Police Officer William Bell, 26, was a 3-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Wabash Avenue Station.
On February 6, 1967, Officer Bell was off duty when he responded to a robbery-in-progress occurring at a grocery store in the 1700 block of East 71stStreet. Officer Bell was seeking shelter behind his vehicle as gunfire rang out between the robber and responding officers. Officer Bell mistakenly opened fire on a police officer who approached him from behind. Tragically, officers at the scene were unaware that the plainclothes Bell was a police officer. They opened fire and fatally wounded Officer Bell. The other wounded officer survived the incident.
William Baird, the armed robber was shot and killed by police.
