|Incident Details:||Police Officer William Bunda, 30, was assigned to the Maxwell Street Station.
On March 31, 1924, Officer Bunda was on foot patrol when several men approached him to report that they had been chased down an alley by a trio. Officer Bunda spotted the trio – John Pettitto, John Simonetti, and James Vitaliano – on Miller and Polk Streets. While the officer searched one of the men, Pettitto drew a gun and shot the officer in the spine. The officer returned fire and shot Pettitto in the leg, incapacitating him. Officer Bunda was rushed to Cook County Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on April 7, 1924.
John Simonetti and James Vitaliano were freed by a coroner’s jury. John Pettitto was arrested and charged with murder. On November 26, 1924, he was acquitted.
Officer Bunda was laid to rest in St. Adalbert Cemetery.
