|Incident Details:||Police Officer William Gallagher, 41, was assigned to the Des Plaines Street Station.
On September 25, 1929, Officer Gallagher and Officer Jesse Hults, 45, attempted to rescue a man being held against his will in an apartment on the 4100 block of South Parkway (now Martin Luther King Jr. Drive). When the officers arrived at the apartment, they knocked on the door and it creaked open. Suddenly, gunfire erupted from within. Responding officers exchanged dozens of gunshots and ultimately used teargas to subdue the offenders. Officer Gallagher and Officer Hults were both fatally wounded. Officer Hults was shot seven times and succumbed to his injuries at Mercy Hospital on September 26. Officer Gallagher died at the scene.
Officer Gallagher’s murderer, Ira Johnson, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Officer Hults’ shooter died at the scene.
Officer Gallagher was laid to rest in All Saints Cemetery.
