Incident Details: Police Officer William H. Johnson, 38, was a 14-year veteran of the Chicago Police, assigned to the 018 District. On September 26, 1971, Officer Johnson ended his tour of duty early in the Cabrini Housing Project after complaining he did not feel well. The officer was outside of his home in the 5100 block of Maypole Avenue when two offenders, David Sanders and James Willie Woods, attempted to rob him. Officer Johnson was rushed to Garfield Park Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. David Sanders and James Willie Woods were both acquitted. David Sanders and James Willie Woods were charged with Officer Johnson’s murder.
