|Incident Details:||Detective William Halloran, 36, was assigned to the 1st Precinct.
On July 16, 1887, Detective William Halloran was shot and killed by a man he had helped send to prison, Mike Lynch. Lynch had been sentenced to 20 years in prison, but was released after serving four years. After he was released from prison he returned to a life of crime. Detective Halloran and his partner were searching for the wanted offender when they saw him at the corner of Wentworth Avenue and 25th Street. As the partners approached Lynch, he drew a gun and fatally wounded Detective Halloran.
Mike Lynch was found guilty and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Lynch was later placed in a mental institution where he stayed until 1898; he was either released or escaped.
Detective Halloran was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.
