||Police Officer William J. Luce, 45, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Special Operations Unit. During firearms testing, Officer Luce was exposed to radiation when a scope dismantled from a gun. The radiation caused severe burns to his body and face. On August 14, 1989, Officer Luce died after a battle with cancer. Officer Luce’s funeral mass was held at Santa Lucia Catholic Church and he was laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Richard, Nick, and Brian; and daughters, Janet Lynn and Lisa. He was a Vietnam Veteran.
