|Incident Details:||Police Officer William King, 43, was assigned to the Cottage Grove Station.
On May 25, 1920, Officer King removed Freeland Bettis from a street car and placed him under arrest. The officer walked to a police patrol box to call for a wagon to pick up Bettis when the offender removed a concealed weapon and shot the officer. Officer King succumbed to his injuries hours later.
Freeland Bettis was sentenced to life in prison on March 10, 1921.
Officer King was laid to rest in Walnut Ridge Cemetery located in Jeffersonville, IN.
