|Incident Details:||Police Officer William Messanger, 30, was an 8-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 2nd District.
On April 24, 1901, Officer Messanger was patrolling his beat when two young women approached him and told him about a man who was following them. The officer ordered the man, Richard Houghtelling, to leave the women alone. Hours later, Houghtelling entered the Harrison Street Station and shot the officer. Houghtelling was shot and taken to hospital where he died the next day. Officer Messanger was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on April 25.
Officer Messanger was laid to rest in the mausoleum of Graceland Cemetery.
