Incident Details: Detective William Murphy, 34, was assigned to the Detective Bureau – Area 1.

On August 15, 1955, Detective Murphy was riding the CTA to work when he noticed a passenger wanted for more than 150 tavern robberies. Officer Murphy displayed his service weapon and his badge and attempted to place the robber under arrest on the platform at Roosevelt Road and State Street. The offender, Richard Carpenter drew a gun and fatally wounded the officer. The offender fled the scene and two days later shot another Chicago Police Officer who attempted to arrest him. Officer Murphy died before arriving to a hospital.

Richard Carpenter was found guilty of Officer Murphy’s murder and the attempted murder of the second officer. He was executed in 1958.

Officer Murphy was laid to rest at All Saints Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, daughter, father (CPD) and brother (CPD).
