Police Officer William Roberts, 30, was assigned to the Hyde Park Station.
On May 14, 1920, Officer Roberts attempted to question Horace Walton about the contents of a bag he was carrying in the 5000 block of South Drexel Boulevard. The unsuspecting officer was unaware that Horace had robbed a mail car en route from Kankakee to Chicago hours earlier. Officer Roberts was speaking to the suspect when Horace drew a weapon and fatally wounded the officer. A passing motorist heard the gunshots and transported the injured officer to Washington Park Hospital. Officer Walton succumbed to his injuries hours later.
Walton Horace was shot by arresting officers.
Officer Roberts was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
