|Incident Details:||Probationary Police Officer James Mitchell, 26, was a 2-month veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 11th Precinct.
On November 16, 1915, Officer Mitchell and his partner, Officer John C. Burke, were on midnight patrol when they noticed a group of suspicious men near 49thand Federal Streets. The officers approached and began speaking to the men. While Albert Holland was being search, he drew a gun and fatally wounded Officer Mitchell. Holland fled the scene. Officer Mitchell was transported to Washington Park Hospital where he died on November 17.
Holland was apprehended a month later. He was found guilty of Officer Mitchell’s death and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Mitchell was survived by his parents.
