Probationary Police Officer William O’Malley, 25, was assigned to the Warren Avenue Station.
On December 30, 1922, Officer O’Malley was making his end of the shift call from a police patrol box when he heard a report of a shooting nearby. The officer volunteered to respond to the scene with Officer S.R. Kennedy and W.M. Murphy. En route to the scene the officers spotted the suspected offenders—John Reiss with a group of people. Officer O’Malley questioned Reiss and then decided to place him under arrest. As the officer arrested him, O’Malley drew a gun and fatally wounded him. Officer Kennedy returned fire and fatally wounded Reiss. Officer O’Malley was rushed to Cook County Hospital where he later died.
Officer O’Malley was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.
