Incident Details: Police Officer Charles Eichhorst, 43, was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 020 District.

On August 4, 1965, Officer Eichhorst was checking parking meters when a citizen reported to him that a robbery-in-progress was occurring at a grocery store in the 2500 block of West Lawrence Avenue. The sergeant was searching the offender, Richard Black, in the parking lot and was unaware that there was a second robber inside. As he searched Richard Black, his partner, Holice Black, exited the store and shot the sergeant in the head.

Holice and Richard Black were found guilty of murder. Holice, 22, was sentenced to serve 100-200 years in prison. Richard, 21, was sentenced to serve 75 to 100 years in prison. They also received an additional 20-40 years in prison for being found guilty of armed robbery.

Sergeant Eichhorst’s funeral mass was held at First Congregational Church and he was laid to rest in Ridgewood Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Jean, and children, Jill and Charles Jr.
