Sergeant Floyd Beardsley, 47, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 9th District.
On October 31, 1926, Sergeant Beardsley and Sergeant Andrew Harrah, were searching for Timothy Hennessy. Hennessey, along with Stanly Gracyas and Henry Perry were members of a notorious auto thief gang that operated within the district. When the officers arrived to a garage rented by Hennessy, they found Gracyas and Perry in the act of transporting a stolen vehicle. Gracyas opened fire on Officer Beardsley, fatally wounding him.
Stanly Gracyas was charged with murder.
Officer Beardsley was laid to rest in Cedar Park Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, father, and brother.
