|Incident Details:||Sergeant John Chiska, 48, was a 22-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Cragin Avenue Station.
On April 5, 1928, Sergeant Chiska was at the Cragin Station when he received a call from a concerned store owner. The owner reported to the officer that two men were lurking outside of his business located in the 2200 block of North Lorel Avenue. When the sergeant arrived, he was surprised by a third offender, Steven Cygan. Cygan opened fire and wounded the officer. Sergeant Chiska was rushed to Keystone Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Steven Cyska was found guilty and died in the electric chair in 1939.
Sergeant Chiska’s ashes were buried in Bronswood Cemetery located in Oak Brook, IL. He is survived by his wife, Rose; and daughters, Lucille and Loretta.
