|Incident Details:||Sergeant Patrick Delaney, 50, was a 21-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Maxwell Street Station.
On October 4, 1927, Sgt. Delaney approached a suspicious group of people at 14thand Loomis Streets. When he attempted to question them, Arthur Lucas shot and fatally injured Delaney. The wounded sergeant crawled to a nearby police patrol box and called for help. He was rushed to County Hospital where he died moments before his family arrived.
Arthur Lucas 24, was sentenced to serve 14 years in prison. The rest of the group’s charges were dismissed.
Sgt. Delaney's funeral mass was held at Revelation Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Anna; and children, Marie, Imilda, William, and Robert.
