Incident Details: | Sergeant Richard Cummings, 42, was assigned to the Town Hall Station.
On April 27, 1905, Sergeant Cummings was in command of a detail guarding a Montgomery Ward & Co. caravan of wagons against striking teamsters. Sergeant Cummings was struck and mortally wounded by a bus driven by John Ceresa near Dearborn Street and Washington Street. The sergeant was pulled from underneath and transported to Alexian Brothers Hospital where he died on May 1, 1905. A coroner’s jury ruled the incident accidental. Sergeant Cummins was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. |
