|Incident Details:||Sergeant Thomas Egan, 28, was assigned to the New City Station.
On August 20, 1921, Sergeant Egan was detailed to protect Superintendent Charles Fitzmorris’ home in the 1700 block of East 56th Street. While in front of the home, an armed offender, Walter Grzybowski, approached him with a drawn gun. Sergeant Egan opened fire and wounded Grzybowski. Tragically, the wounded offender was able to return fire and fatally wound the sergeant. Sergeant Egan died at Illinois Central Hospital on August 25.
Walter Grzybowski committed suicide before the trial.
Sergeant Egan was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
