|Incident Details:||Detective William Johnson, 37, was a 12-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Detective Division – Area 1.
On November 18, 1960, Detective William Johnson and his partner, Detective Jerry Howard, 28, of the Sex Bureau, were responding to a report of a suspected rapist. The detectives were driving through the intersection of 59th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue when their vehicle was broadsided. Detective Howard suffered minor injuries. Detective Johnson was ejected from the vehicle and severely injured. The detective was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
Detective Johnson’s funeral mass was held at Metropolitan Community Church and he was laid to rest in Lincoln Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Vera; and children, William and Carol.
