Incident Details: Detective Charles Annerino, 30, was an 8-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Detective Division.

On October 22, 1954, Detective Annerino, Detective William Murphy, and Officer John Bosquette entered a tavern shortly before midnight in the 1700 block of Lawrence Avenue. The officers saw Agustino “Gus” Amedeo sitting at the bar with his head bowed and arms and elbows hiding his face. Amedeo was a wanted fugitive who had escaped from Cook County Jail. The officers approached Amedeo while Detective Annerino attempted to put him under arrest. The detective and Amedeo began to struggle when two shots rang out; one struck Detective Annerino below the heart. Amedeo fled the scene, but was killed eight days later in a gun battle with police. Detective Annerino succumbed to his injuries at Ravenswood Hospital.

Detective William Murphy died in the line of duty on August 15, 1955, while trying to arrest a wanted ex-convict.

Detective Annerino’s funeral mass was held at St. Jerome’s Church and he was laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Rose; and children, Charles and Theresa.
