Incident Details: Police Officer Edward Leach was a 4-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Fiftieth Street Station.

On February 10, 1899, Officer Leach and Officer Patrick Furlong ended their tour of duty at midnight and went to William Wagner's Saloon located in the 6000 block of South State Street.  While in the saloon, Officer Leach, an Englishman, and Furlong, who was of Irish parentage, began to argue about the Boer War.  The argument ended when both men drew their guns; Officer Leach was shot twice.  Officer Leach was transported to Englewood Union Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Patrick Furlong was sentenced to serve 14 years in prison.  On December 22, 1900, he was pardoned by then-Governor John Tanner.

Officer Leach was survived by his wife.
