|Incident Details:||Police Officer George Neil, 38, was assigned to the 18th District.
On May 19, 1930, Officer Neil witnessed four Caucasian males assaulting an Africa-American man inside of a diner in the 5400 block of South Halsted Street. The officer attempted to intervene and help the victim when the four offenders turned on him. During the altercation, one of the offenders disarmed Officer Neil and shot him in the stomach. Officer Neil succumbed to his injuries at German Deaconess Hospital on May 22.
John Kelly, Daniel Lynch, William O’Malley and William Connors were arrested, but not convicted.
Officer Neil was laid to rest in Mount Greenwood Cemetery.
