Incident Details: Police Officer Harl Meister, 35, was a 7-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 010 District.

On December 23, 1975, Officer Harl Meister and his son, Harold, had finished some last minute Christmas shopping. As Harold, 8, sat in the front passenger side seat, Officer Meister loaded packages into the trunk of his station wagon in a discount parking lot located on the 5600 block of South Cicero Avenue. Four teenagers approached the officer, one yielding a .22 caliber gun and attempted a stick-up. Anthony Freeman pulled the trigger and shot Officer Meister and his 8-year-old son. Officer Meister and his son were transported to Holy Cross Hospital. The officer was pronounced dead on arrival. Harold Meister was shot in the face; the bullet traveled through his neck and lodged itself into his shoulder. The child later recovered.

Anthony Freeman pleaded guilty to murder and armed robbery. He was sentenced to serve 20 to 50 years in prison. Anthony Reese was sentenced to serve 14 to 20 years in prison. Nathaniel Dudley and Charles Jakes were both sentenced to serve 3 to 9 years.

Officer Meister’s funeral mass was held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Judith; son, Harold; and daughters, Jennifer and Nancy.
